Elk and Money!

The benefits this new policy will have for elk hunting in Idaho are easy to find.

Advantage #1: More elk for later!

The 2005 elk count is much healthier than the more recent 2008 count. The numbers for both years are shown below:

2005

  • 2500 cow elk
  • 334 bull elk

2008

  • 1200 cow elk
  • 58 bull elk
A tag cap will allow the elk population to recover from such low numbers and become healthy again.

Advantage #2: More money!

Nonresident hunting fees increased as of May 1st this year. The increases in nonresident bow-hunting fees are shown below:

2008

  • Elk tag - $372.50
  • License - $141.50
  • Permit - $18.25
2009

  • Elk tag - $416.75
  • License - $154.75
  • Permit - $20.00
With almost half of the tags going to nonresidents, the state has a good chance to make some money from this policy.
